How to Play Michigan-Style Euchre
OBJECTIVE
Be the first team to reach 10 points. Euchre is played with four players divided into two teams. Partners sit across from each other.
THE DECK
Use a 24-card deck consisting of the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King, and Ace of each suit.
DEALING
The dealer deals five cards to each player, usually in two rounds. The remaining four cards are placed face down in the middle, and the top card is turned face up.
CHOOSING TRUMP
First Round: Starting with the player to the dealer's left, each player may pass or order up the face-up suit as trump. If someone orders it up, the dealer picks up the face-up card and discards one card from their hand.
Second Round: If everyone passes, the face-up card is turned down. Starting with the player to the dealer's left, each player may name any other suit as trump.
Stick the Dealer: If everyone passes in both rounds, the dealer must name a trump suit.
CARD RANKINGS
The trump suit is the strongest suit.
The cards rank from highest to lowest as follows:
Trump Suit: Jack of trump (Right Bower), Jack of the same color (Left Bower), Ace, King, Queen, 10, 9.
Other Suits: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9.
The Jack of the same color as trump becomes part of the trump suit. For example, if Hearts are trump, the Jack of Diamonds is also a trump card.
PLAYING THE HAND
The player to the dealer's left leads the first trick by playing any card.
Each player takes a turn playing one card. You must follow the suit led if you have a card of that suit. If you do not have that suit, you may play any card, including trump.
The highest card of the suit led wins the trick unless a trump card is played. If trump is played, the highest trump wins.
The winner of each trick leads the next trick. There are five tricks in each hand.
SCORING
The team that chooses trump is called the makers. The other team is the defenders.
-
Makers win 3 or 4 tricks: 1 point.
-
Makers win all 5 tricks: 2 points.
-
Makers win fewer than 3 tricks: The defenders score 2 points. This is called being euchred.
GOING ALONE
A player with a strong hand may choose to play without their partner. The partner sits out that hand.
-
Win 3 or 4 tricks alone: 1 point.
-
Win all 5 tricks alone: 4 points.
-
Win fewer than 3 tricks: The defenders score 2 points.
WINNING THE GAME
The first team to reach 10 points wins the game.
